The Winter Gardens

for Sheffield City Council

The Winter Gardens, which are linked to the new Millennium Gallery, form an important part of the award winning Heart of the City redevelopment project within Sheffield city centre.

This is one of the largest temperate glasshouses to be built in more than a century.  It measures some 70 metres long by 22 metres wide and 22 metres from floor to ceiling.  Twenty enormous wooden arches, made of Glulam, span the structure.

The Gardens have been designed as highly energy efficient and provide a model for sustainable development within a city centre location.  An intelligent temperature control system automatically operates fans and vents to ensure plants are cooled in summer and kept warm in the winter months.

The Winter Gardens provide a green haven within the bustling city for the people of Sheffield.
