This project - comprising a development totalling some 13,000m² in plan area split between buildings and external works - involved the construction of an aircraft maintenance facility and ancillary buildings consisting of a large steel framed hangar, up to 35 metres high, with a linked three-storey office facility. There was a high level of building services, many running at high level. External works comprised a large area of concrete hardstanding, car parking facilities and an access road.
This particular contract was awarded under a competitive two stage tender process where Interserve personnel worked closely with the client and the design team during the second stage to integrate their construction methodology with designers' creativity. The team's joint effort focused on achieving the required quality, cost and programme certainty, with Interserve signing up to an agreed contract sum within the client's budget. The Aircraft Hangar Facility was handed over to BAA and VAA on time, followed by completion of the remaining offices and external works.
