Plc  >  Social responsibility  >  Water

Water is a precious resource and must be used prudently.

Our goal is to facilitate effective water management to support reducing demand, meeting end-use efficiently and to use recycled/reclaimed water where appropriate.

Climate change and land use are increasing the risk of flooding.

Sustainable Drainage Strategies incorporate the principles of reducing flood risk and include initiatives such as rainwater harvesting and waste water treatments.

Sustainability in practice

  • Water saving showerheads and push taps for hand wash basins have been installed at selected barracks on the MOD’s Defence Training Estate
  • The sedum roofing at the Hadley Learning Community helps control the drainage of rainwater, which is captured and recycled to be used in the toilet facilities.
  • Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) have been installed at RAF High Wycombe, protecting the underlying aquifer and reducing the flood risk.
  • The Westminster Bridge contract employs an innovative filter layer built into the scaffolding to clean the water used to shot-blast and steam-clean/wash existing paintwork prior to its discharge into the river.
